Thiago Silva not to be given Chelsea captaincy
As confirmed by the club’s official site, Brazilian defender Thiago Silva has joined Chelsea.
The 35-year-old becomes the club’s fifth summer signing for the senior squad. He is also the third defender signed by Chelsea in three days.
Despite his advanced age, Silva’s leadership skills and ability to marshall a backline could become key components of our squad next season.
According to The Telegraph, the Brazilian ace will not be handed the armband by Blues boss Frank Lampard.
The reason behind it is the defender’s lack of fluency in English. Communication is a key factor when it comes to commanding a defence and it is something Chelsea failed to do well last season.
Despite his ability and force of character, handing the responsibility to a player who cannot speak the language is detrimental.
It can be argued that as a multinational squad, there will be a number of different languages that could be used. Moreover, players could at times lead by their own play.
Given that Silva is the new player in the squad, the others will take a while to get used to his rhythm. At least for now, the position of captain seems to be off the table.
The current Chelsea skipper is Cesar Azplicueta. The Spaniard took over the reins in 2018 and has since led us with distinction.
