Chelsea make an official opening bid of £45m+£9m add-ons for key summer target

Chelsea make an official bid for Kai Havertz

According to Transfer expert Ian McGarry on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Express), Chelsea have an opening bid for Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz.

The German ace had become Chelsea’s top priority following the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. Chelsea officials were in Germany recently and were satisfied to make an opening bid.

According to the report, the Blues have made an opening bid of £45million up-front with a further £9m in add-ons. Leverkusen are not expected to reject the proposal but will hold out for around £81m.

Chelsea have an opening bid for Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz

“Petr Cech had visited Leverkusen to speak to officials there and the player about a possible move to Stamford Bridge. That has resulted in an opening bid of 50m euros plus 10m euros in add-ons.”

Chelsea, for their part, believe Leverkusen are overvaluing their prized star. They believe the price is not fair for a 21-year-old.

However, it does not mean the Blues’ offer is final. Chelsea are keen to secure Havertz and are willing to pay up.

The addition of Havertz will be key for the Blues attack next season. The loss against Arsenal in the FA Cup final made that abundantly clear.

Pulisic has been Chelsea’s best player since the restart

Christian Pulisic was our most threatening player offensively. The club struggled to break down the Arsenal defence in his absence. The fact that we had no shot on goal since the 10th minute is worrying.

The addition of Ziyech, Werner and potentially Havertz should add more bite to our frontline. If it was not apparent before, it is clear now.

Coming on the back of a sensational 2019/20 campaign, Havertz plundered 17 goals and 9 assists in 43 games across all competitions.

If he signs, Havertz will become the third German in the Chelsea squad after Antonio Rudiger and Werner.
