What was seen as a euphoric end to the season was anything but. Chelsea threw away an early lead and succumbed 2-1 to arch-rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
It was another heartbreaking end to the season for Frank Lampard. His Derby County side fell to Aston Villa in the Championship playoff final last season at the same venue.
It could prove to be third time lucky for the Blues boss given the ambition his side have shown in the summer transfer window. Chelsea moved quickly to secure both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner even before the window was open. Their business is far from done.
Speaking to BT Sports (h/t Football.london), former Chelsea star Joe Cole believes the team should focus on strengthening the defence going into next season.
“There still needs to be recruitment and there still needs to be investment at the back end of the pitch.”
Cole believes Lampard’s young squad has outperformed the expectations placed on them at the beginning fo the season. Finishing in the top four while qualifying for the FA Cup final is all well and good, but a club such as Chelsea can never be happy coming second best.
He believes Lampard is the man who can bring back the glory days to Stamford Bridge.
“Frank is man to do that 100 percent no doubt because what he has done here has been fantastic.”
Owner Roman Abramovich’s most trusted advisor, club director Marina Granovskaia oversees Chelsea’s transfer strategy and plays a crucial role when it comes to negotiations.
With the club looking to bring in Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell, not to mention a new goalkeeper, she could have a major role to play in the coming month.
His first season at the Bridge may have ended trophyless, but Lampard has shown that both he and his team are a work in progress.
With better tools at his disposal next season, it remains to be seen what the Chelsea legend can achieve.
