Chelsea close to a breakthrough in Kai Havertz transfer

According to Football.London, Chelsea are close to a breakthrough in their pursuit of Kai Havertz.

The Blues have been linked consistently with the 21-year-old German sensation, who is one of the best young players on the continent.

However, Leverkusen have refused to budge and are standing firm on their £80m asking price for the player. According to the report, it appears that an agreement is getting closer.

If it does come to pass, Havertz will become the third high-profile star to move to the Bridge. Chelsea have already brought in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner earlier this window.

Havertz had also garnered interest from a number of Europe’s biggest clubs such as Real Madrid and Liverpool. The current financial crisis has seen both sides shelve their plans at least for this summer.

Chelsea however find themselves in a unique position. Ironically, it is the aftermath of the transfer ban we had to endure last summer.

Timo Werner joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig

With no money spent in the last two windows, Chelsea are now primed to make a splash. Meeting Leverkusen’s asking price will make Havertz the most expensive signing in Blues history.

That record is currently held by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Hopefully, Havertz will enjoy better fortune than the Spaniard.

A new challenge

Havertz is keen on a move and has already agreed to switch to Stamford Bridge. The player is keen to play in the Champions League and is ready to make the step up in his career.

Lampard will have a stronger team at his disposal

Leverkusen finished fifth in the Bundesliga last season. It was only good enough for them to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

Chelsea, on the other hand, will be in the pot for the Champions League group stage draw to be held on 1st October. The Blues will look to improve upon their last-16 finish in last season’s tournament.

Lampard’s side lost out to Bayern Munich who went on to win the tournament.

Chelsea are also interested in Ben Chilwell

More Chelsea News

Havertz is by no means the last major player being targetted by the Blues. Chelsea are also closing in on Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell. The Englishman will strengthen what has been a problematic position for Lampard.
