Chelsea earmark relegated veteran star to strengthen key position

Chelsea keeping tabs on Watford ace Ben Foster

According to The Sun, Watford ace, Ben Foster has emerged as a potential replacement for under-fire Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard has come under the scanner following a spate of unconvincing performances. Kepa’s poor form has seen Frank Lampard replace him with reserve goalkeeper Willy Caballero towards the end of the season.

Despite being 37, Foster was one of the best keepers in the Premier League. Chelsea, however, face competition from Everton for the Englishman’s signature. (h/t The Sun)

Chelsea are interested in Ben Foster

Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on Ajax Amsterdam star Andre Onana and Atletico Madrid ace Jan Oblak. However, our ability to pay for either of the players is suspect. (h/t The Sun)

The Blues have already gone big to sign Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. With the club working on deals for both Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell, raising funds for a top-class goalkeeper could prove difficult.

We can raise more funds by offloading Kepa. However, the lack of suitors remains a pressing issue.

Foster could be a solid signing short term, but he is unlikely to be an upgrade over Willy Caballero. Although not a world-beater, the Argentine has held the fort well after replacing Kepa in goal.

It must, however, be remarked that Foster won the award for best goalkeeper in the London Football Awards in 2019.

As the last line of defence, the goalkeeper must inspire confidence among his teammates. Although his defence is far from perfect, Kepa has failed to do his part when it comes to being our number one.

Bringing in a dependable shot-stopper remains high on our list of priorities.

Foster is at best a short-term option. He might as well buy us some time in which we can look for a long term solution while also raise funds for the same.

What Chelsea decides to do remains to be seen.
