According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are closing in on the capture of Premier League star Ben Chilwell.
The Leicester City star is Chelsea’s first-choice left-back target this summer. A deal for the 23-year-old is expected to be completed early next week.
According to the report, Leicester are under no pressure to sell the player. With Chilwell’s contract running until 2024, they are in a strong position when it comes to negotiations.
The situation should however change should the player ask to leave. He is believed to be keen on a move to Chelsea and compete in the UEFA Champions League.
The Blues trumped the Foxes to the coveted fourth spot last season. Leicester however have only themselves to blame as they let a comfortable top-three position slip away after the restart.
Signing Chilwell will make him the third high-profile signing Frank Lampard has pulled off this summer. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have already joined the blue revolution.
The Blues backline has been a consistent source of worry for Lampard this season. Both Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have failed to impress at left-back when given the opportunity.
With Chilwell coming in, Emerson is expected to make way. The Italian is attracting interest from his homeland, with Inter Milan keen. (h/t Sky Sports)
Leicester are also moving ahead with life after Chilwell. According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Foxes are keen on Ajax Amsterdam star Nicolas Tagliafico to replace their outgoing English international.
With Leicester having forced United to pay Harry Maguire’s weight in gold last season, Chilwell might not come cheap.
Although he is not expected to cost as much as the United skipper, Chelsea could end up making Chilwell the most expensive left-back in world football. (h/t The Times)
Chelsea are far from done in the transfer window though. They are also closing in on Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz.
By addressing a key deficiency, Chelsea will have taken their first steps in revamping their backline.
