Boost for Chelsea in pursuit of impressive young British star

Boost for Chelsea as West Ham United ready to sell Declan Rice

According to the Sun, Chelsea have received encouraging news in their pursuit of West Ham United star Declan Rice.

The 21-year-old spent his initial years at Chelsea before moving to West Ham. he has since flourished and is one of the best young homegrown talents in the Premier League today.

Chelsea are leading the race for his signature with Frank Lampard a fan of the player. The Blues boss views the young Hammer as the solution to his defensive problems.

West Ham United will need to sell Declan Rice to fund transfers this summer

Primarily used as a defensive midfielder, Rice is equally adept at playing in defence. A player with good organizational and leadership skills, he will add much to the Blues backline.

According to the report, the Hammers have no desire to sell their player of the year. They will, however, find it hard to turn down any offers that get close to their £70million valuation of the player.

In fact, they could have no other choice but to sell Rice if they are serious about revamping their squad.

The Chelsea defence had no answer to Bayern Munich

David Moyes is keen to add to a squad that only survived relegation. With no revenue incoming, he will be hard-pressed to do so. Cashing in on their prized possession will however give them an avenue to further strengthen their squad this summer.

The report goes on to add that although West ham are interested in a number of players, they are in no position to bid for them. This augurs well for Chelsea who are very keen on Rice.

It appears to be a matter of taking the opportunity of the situation. If things stay as they are, Chelsea’s hand will only grow stronger. Whether a deal can be worked out remains to be seen.

Chelsea’s defeat to Bayern Munich showcased the necessity for us to strengthen at the back. The Blues defence was all over the place as Die Roten ran amok.

Lampard and co will have to pay heed to the warning signs and ensure we are as well equipped at the back rather than focus on making us a top-heavy team.
