Roman Abramovich issues a transfer challenge to Marina Granovskaia

Marina Granovskaia will have to recruit within the club’s means

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein via the Tifo Podcast (h/t Express), Marina Granovskaia cannot rely on Roman Abramovich’s chequebook to oversee a squad overhaul at Chelsea.

The Blues have moved quickly and with purpose ahead of the summer window. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have both joined the club.

This will give manager Frank Lampard the tools to push on from what has been an extremely promising debut season at the Bridge. With the Blues needing just a solitary point to ensure Champions League qualification, the next step is to challenge for trophies at the top.

Frank Lampard will have a stronger squad at his disposal next season

Ziyech and Werner have cost the club around £84million in total while the likes of Havertz will cost £72m. If it comes to be, will make Havertz the most expensive purchase in club history.

Apart from a goalkeeper and a left-back, Chelsea are also on the lookout for a center back who can boost their defense.

With the coronavirus crisis limiting the finances across the game, the Blues will have to offload players in order to fund more deals. According to the report, Chelsea are keen to keep withing the stipulations of Financial Fair Play.

“Chelsea have committed to complying with Financial Fair Play regulations. They do not want to rely on owner Roman Abramovich’s personal wealth. They want to run a sustainable model.”

Eden Hazard left Chelsea for big money last summer

The responsibility of ensuring the club stays withing its means while also putting a competitive squad together falls on the shoulders of Granovskiaia.

“It’s the responsibility of Marina Granovskaia to run Chelsea’s business. She has to balance the books.”

Ironically, Chelsea’s transfer ban last summer ensured the club have funds to spend this summer. Ornstein has expressed his confidence that the Blues have enough in their kitty to land their major targets.

“They do have money in the bank and I would be quite confident they will get the targets that they want.”
