Tim Sherwood picks Ruben Loftus-Cheek as Chelsea’s best young talent
Speaking to DAZN (h/t Metro), former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood has picked Ruben Loftus-Cheek as the club’s best youth talent.
That is some statement considering the number of players who have enjoyed a breakout season under Frank Lampard.
At 24, Loftus-Cheek is not necessarily young anymore. What could have been a promising season for him, has instead turned into a nightmare, with him missing most of it due to injury.
“Their best kid in my opinion is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. I think he’s a Rolls-Royce of a footballer.”
Widely considered to be one of the club’s best talents to come through the system, it is a shame that the injury has kept him out for so long.
Now back in the reckoning, Ruben has made three appearances for the club in the Premier League this season. The fact that he keeps getting time on the pitch shows Lampard could view the player as a part of his long-term plan.
Loftus-Cheek attracted attention from Bayern Munich in 2019 and the Bundesliga giants were willing to pay £45m for the midfielder. Thankfully, he ended up staying and could now be ready to make a mark at Chelsea.
Chelsea are set for a big summer. They have already brought in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, and could bring in even more.
Lampard, to his credit, has blooded in a number of youngsters to go along with our rekindling of dominance in the transfer market. Sherwood believes there is no shame in spending if the club has the money.
“They’re blooding a few more of the young players that they’ve got and then they’re spending money.”
He has hinted at the balance being maintained between nurturing our own talents and also bringing in new players.
