According to the Metro, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has revealed that he asked midfielder Mason Mount to alter his shooting style following David de Gea’s error for Chelsea’s opener.
The young Englishman got Chelsea off to a brilliant start in the second half with a long-range strike. The Manchester United keeper made a right hash of a straightforward save and Mount wheeled away in celebration.
It gave the Blues a two-goal cushion after Olivier Giroud had given us the lead in the first half. A Harry Maguire own goal ensured that a late Bruno Fernandes penalty was nothing more than a mere consolation.
Mount’s goal appears more planned than it looked to be if Lampard’s words are anything to go by. The Chelsea boss explicitly refused to say if he asked his players to pepper the Spanish goalkeeper.
However, he did ask Mount to lace his boots through at every opportunity. And it paid off with his first effort in the second half.
“All I did say to Mason at half-time is that I want to see him strike-through balls more.”
Although Lampard acknowledged it took a mistake from his opponents to let his team score, he did not attempt to play it otherwise.
Of course, he didn’t catch it brilliantly and it goes in, probably down as a mistake but it’s more that my job is to worry about my players.”
Lampard as a player was famous for scoring goals from midfield. The sight of the Englishman bearing down to strike the goal homeward would have given nightmares to many goalkeepers.
Chelsea are now through to the FA Cup final, where they face off against Arsenal. A win will see Lampard win his first major trophy as a manager. Few are more prestigious than the FA Cup.
