According to the Daily Star, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has opened up on the future of his ace goalkeeper Jan Oblak amidst Chelsea’s interest.
The Slovenian is among the finest players in his position and has consistently emerged as a match-winner for the Spanish giants.
Chelsea has been linked with a move for the 27-year-old following the inconsistent displays by current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga. Although Simeone can understand our interest, he believes his skipper is going nowhere.
“I am not surprised that Chelsea admire Jan Oblak, he is a decisive player for us.”
With Atletico now regulars in the UEFA Champions League, they are under no obligation to sell. The lucrative competition ensures a steady flow of revenue.
“He is the captain and our participation every year in the Champions League helps us keep our best players so I hope he will continue with us.”
Chelsea can always agree to pay the player’s release clause. But with that figure standing at a staggering £103m, it will see us once again break the world-record fee for a keeper.
With his current contract running until 2023, the Spaniards hold the aces when it comes to negotiations. With Atletico usually in the fray for the La Liga title and regularly participating in the Champions League, he is already experiencing everything Chelsea can promise him.
Oblak is a proven talent at the top level. He has conceded just 173 goals in 254 matches for Atletico and has kept an impressive 138 clean sheets. The fact that he averages 0.68 goals conceded per match is truly mind-boggling.
The goalkeeper is a key upgrade Chelsea will have to make in order to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City.
Liverpool have in recent years shown the difference that a competent goalkeeper can have. Kepa has failed to repay the faith put in him and the time has come for us to cut our losses.
