Speaking to Sky Sports, Frank Lampard has urged Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to not get too arrogant following their 5-3 win over Chelsea last night.
The Blues were unable to spoil the Merseysiders’ special occasion as we slumped to a 5-3 defeat. Although an entertaining encounter for a neutral, it was a frustrating night for the Chelsea boss.
The spark between the managers occurred in the first half after Mateo Kovacic brought down Sadio Mane in the Chelsea half.
“Fair play to Liverpool Football Club, they’ve won the league, but also don’t get too arrogant with it.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold stepped up to curl his free-kick home, in what has now become a trademark. The result did little to lighten Lampard’s mood.
“For me, it wasn’t a foul from Kovacic, and there were a lot of things that weren’t going our way.”
Lampard sticks to the point that it was not a foul on Kovacic before admitting that he has no problems with Klopp.
Georginio Wijnaldum made it 3-0 before Olivier Giroud pulled one back before the break. Roberto Firmino scored his first goal at Anfield this season before Christian Pulisic came off the bench to give us hope.
Unfortunately, it was not to be and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain settled the game late on.
It was a heated encounter that brought back memories of the Liverpool-Chelsea battles from the past. Provided we develop as we expect, there should be plenty of them in the future.
It was ultimately a match that had fireworks both on and off the pitch. Hopefully, we will soon get to experience the same at Stamford Bridge.
Some sections can call Lampard a sore loser. We have no problems with that. It helps maintain a competitive edge that remains defiant even during a setback.
The truth, however, remains that Liverpool showed us exactly why they are ahead of us at the moment. That lesson would have been harsher had former Blues star Mohamed Salah been more clinical.
It is time we took the lesson and moved on. Lampard clearly seems to know what he is up against and the onus is on the team to step up and meet it.
