Chelsea to prioritize attacking star despite defensive horror against West Ham

Chelsea to prioritize Kai Havertz over the signing of a centre-back

According to Goal (h/t Express), Chelsea will prioritize the signing of Kai Havertz over a centre-back this summer.

This comes despite our defensive frailties laid bare for all to see against West Ham United. The Blues slumped to a 3-2 defeat against the Hammers in a game fraught with defensive errors.

In signing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Chelsea have built an exciting frontline for next season. The real danger, however, lies at the back, where we have struggled to keep teams at bay.

The German international is a top transfer target for Frank Lampard. He has flourished in the Bundesliga, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists this season.

One of the most in-demand young players, we will have to beat off competition from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich for the 21-year-old. (h/t Express)

According to the report, the Blues will also look to add to their rearguard, but it’s not in central defence. Chelsea are keen to bring in a left-back, with Ben Chilwell the preferred choice.

Chelsea need to strengthen defensively

Marcos Alonso was off-sorts yesterday and it is clear that we will need better options on the flank.

It is clear that a defensive reorganization is required, maybe not just in playing staff. Adding to our defensive coaching staff should be another aspect that needs to be looked at it.

Even the best players are capable of making errors. However, given how often we appear to do so should be a blot on our coaching and tactics as well.

The Blues will do well to strengthen not just the attack but also the defence. Scintillating attacking football is a pleasure to watch but it does not necessarily guarantee trophies.

Liverpool’s blitz to the Champions League final in 2018 was entertaining, but they only won it the next year after building a solid backline. Chelsea will do well to take a leaf out of rivals’ books.
