According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are interested in Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic.
The 22-year-old, who joined the Spanish giants last season, has found life in Madrid difficult. He has struggled on the pitch and has scored just twice in 25 appearances this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
His goal contribution of 0.16 per game in Real colours pales significantly to the 0.60 per game he showcased at Eintracht Frankfurt.
According to the report, the Spaniards are willing to let him leave for as little as £31.3million this summer. A significant drop given they paid £55m for him last year.
Frank Lampard could offer the Serbian as an escape route as he continues to overhaul his Chelsea squad. Having already brought in Timo Werner, the addition of Jovic will give our frontline a Bundesliga flavour.
Tammy Abraham has performed admirably as the first-choice striker this season. However, he has failed to show consistency and has seen his early season purple patch fade away.
It remains to be seen if he has what it takes to become the numero uno at the Bridge. The club cannot stick to sentiment. They must make decisions for the greater good. Unfortunately, it will come at the cost of some stars.
One point that could work against Jovic is his ability to be embroiled in controversies off the pitch. He received a telling off from his country’s Prime Minister after he broke lockdown protocols to fly in for a birthday party.
Chelsea will face competition from Leicester City and AC Milan for the player. If he can control his transgressions off the pitch, he will be a worthwhile investment. Especially at the quoted price.
It remains to be seen if the Blues indeed make a move for the forward.
