Chelsea join the chase for 21-year-old Bundesliga star with £72m release clause

Dayot Upamecano is a man in demand

Chelsea join the race for Dayot Upamecano

According to Football.london, Chelsea have entered the race for Dayot Upamecano.

We will have to go up against the likes of Arsenal and AC Milan, who are also keen on the Frenchman. Upamecano is one of Europe’s most highly-rated young defenders and has made 36 appearances this term.

It was revealed by the Athletic last week that Chelsea are hoping to convince Leipzig to do more business. Signing Upamecano on top of Timo Werner will see us rob the Germans of their crown jewels.

The 21-year-old has one year left on his contract with Leipzig and has a £72million exit clause.

The defence has been our Achilles heel this season. The inability to keep a clean sheet has come to haunt us a number of times. Strengthening the backline will reduce the pressure on our forwards to score more.

Lampard has done well to rejuvenate a Chelsea side that was in need of an overhaul. This summer promises to be a busy one at Chelsea as the Blues aim to close the gap at the top.

Upamecano could be a gamechanger who can change our fortunes on the pitch. Liverpool showed with Virgil van Dijk what the right player can do to a system. There is no reason why we cannot do the same with the Frenchman.

Whether we can get our man or not remains to be seen. Other teams in the fray include Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur. (h/t Football.london)
