According to the Mirror, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has spilt the beans on the origins of his peculiar goal celebrations against Norwich City.
The French veteran scored what went on to be the winner in first-half stoppage time at Stamford Bridge. He celebrated the goal by appearing to write on an imaginary notepad.
From the horse’s own mouth, it appears to be a reference to his scrabble partner N’Golo Kante.
“Oh I play scrabble with N’Golo Kante. That’s it,”
With the Frenchman sidelined but in attendance at the Bridge, it is unsure if he made sense of the celebration. We believe it must have been one hell of a game for it to transcend the board and make it to the pitch.
Clearly, Giroud has been making waves on the pitch too as he notched up his sixth goal in ten appearances. With Tammy Abraham in poor form and Michy Batshuayi nonexistent, the 33-year-old has stepped up when his team needed him.
The goal could prove critical come the end of the season. It ensured we came away with three points on the night. This gives us a three-point advantage over our top-four rivals, albeit playing a game more.
With games against both Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers yet to come, our task is not easy but still thankfully in our own hands.
Giroud’s performance drew praise from Chelsea boss Frank Lampard. Given the Frenchman was low down in the pecking order at the start of the season, his resurgence is a welcome surprise.
Not only has he managed to regain the trust of his manager but also earned himself a one-year extension.
The arrival of Timo Werner could push Giroud back onto the bench. At the very least, the club will have someone dependable available in the wings when needed.
