Transfer boost for Chelsea as Newcastle United drop out out ofLucas Digne race.

Chelsea identify Lucas Digne as Ben Chilwell alternative

According to a report from ESPN, Chelsea have identified Everton full-back Lucas Digne as an alternative for primary left-back target Ben Chilwell heading into the summer.

It is no secret that a new left-back is something that manager Frank Lampard is actively pursuing ahead of the summer transfer window.

The need for a quality option on the left side of the defence became more apparent in our 3-2 defeat against West Ham, when Marcos Alonso was all over the place.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell has been mooted as the top target for Chelsea this summer. However the Foxes want £75m for the England international, which is a touch too steep. (h/t ESPN)

Hence, the Blues have began chalking up alternatives for the Leicester star, with Digne emerging as a viable option. The 27-year-old Frenchman joined Everton from Barcelona in 2018 and has easily been one of their better performers in his two years at Goodison Park.

Given his experience at the highest level and Champions League pedigree, Chelsea have identified him as a possible option to ease the left-back woes. (h/t ESPN)

However, we are not the only club considering a move for the Frenchman, recently vanquished Premier League champions Manchester City also keeping tabs on the 27-year-old. (h/t ESPN)

Digne has been in impressive form this term, in spite of Everton’s struggles. In 33 matches across all competitions, the 27-year-old has scored once and set up seven more.

The 30-time capped French international still has three years left on his current contract with the Merseysiders. However, he is unlikely to cost as much as Chilwell. It now remains to be seen if Chelsea do make a move for the Everton star.
