According to the Evening Standard, Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz is all set to push for a transfer to Chelsea.
The German maestro is expected to make the demand when he talks to the club later this week. Leverkusen stars will return to pre-season after a disappointing Bundesliga campaign that saw then finish fifth.
This will see them miss out on the Champions League next season. Something Chelsea are looking increasingly likely to provide.
The Germans can still qualify if they win the Europa League when it commences next month. It is, however, not an easy task and is far from a guarantee.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is increasingly confident he can land his man once Champions League qualification is guaranteed. It was reported yesterday that Chelsea and Leverkusen have already agreed to a £72m transfer fee.
This will make the German the club’s most expensive purchase, breaking the fee paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018.
If the deal goes through, he will become the third major signing the club has made ahead of the summer transfer window. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have already joined the club in what is set to be an exciting window.
Havertz has enjoyed an excellent season at Leverkusen. He has scored 17 goals and 9 assists from 43 games in all competitions this season. Alongside Ziyech and Werner, he will form a new core for the Blues attack next season.
Havertz believes he is ready for a new challenge and is keen to leave Leverkusen to take the next step in his career. He is also keen to play in Europe’s premier competition. (h/t Mirror)
Havertz initially favoured a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid. However, Los Blancos president Florentino Perez confirmed the club’s stance that they will not be making any high-profile moves this summer. This ensured Chelsea are in with a clear run at getting their man.
