According to the Standard, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has opened up on the club’s interest in German star Kai Havertz.
The Blues have been heavily linked to the Bayer Leverkusen star. According to the report, Lampard has confirmed that the club are yet to make an offer for the 21-year-old.
“No, no bids have gone in.”
Havertz has scored 16 goals and 9 assists in 41 games so far this season. He has been in excellent form since the restart and has grabbed six goals and one assist in seven games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Having already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Chelsea have been ruthless ahead of the summer window. Adding Havertz to that list will certainly add to our ability up front.
Lampard went on to admit that the German is a top player. However, he also went on to add that it is not his business to comment on another team’s player. A diplomatic answer if we have seen one.
“He’s obviously a top player, but I’m certainly not going to comment on other players at other teams.”
The fact that he accepted that no bid has gone in rather than downplay the interest shows that the club is indeed keen on Havertz.
A massive stumbling block could be his huge asking price. Leverkusen value their star at £90m – a huge investment at this point of time.
It was earlier suggested that Chelsea can sign the player for a reduced price if the Germans fail to qualify for the Champions League. Whether this is the case or not remains to be seen.
