Gerson could turn down Chelsea move to benefit Brazil chances
According to the Sun, Samba star Gerson could turn down a move to Chelsea to boost his Brazil national team hopes.
A central midfielder, he is also capable of playing an attacking role. Gerson played a crucial role as Flamengo won both the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores in 2019.
It was reported earlier that the Blues were pursuing him in a deal worth £31million. He will provide cover for N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. We will also have to contend with interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund.
In spite of making 10 appearances for Brazil Under-20s, he is yet to make a senior appearance. It has now been suggested that Gerson may snub a move to Europe in order to boost his chances of making the Brazil squad.
It could be influenced by his previous tryst in the continent, with Roma. He made 42 appearances and scored two goals and one assist during his stint there. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Competition for places will be intense if Gerson moves to Stamford Bridge. He will find it difficult to start if Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic all remain at the club. (h/t Express)
Although he will add numbers to the midfield, we should focus on players who can bring something different to the team. Still 23, he has a long way to go in his career.
An advantage we have is the good relations we share with his agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, who had earlier brokered deals involving David Luiz, Lucas Piazon, Alex and Oscar. (h/t Express)

Gerson has shown he has the ability to put in a decent performance against an English team. He played the majority of the Club World Cup final against Liverpool last January.
Although there was promise, he will have to do much better to thrive in the European arena.
