Chelsea quartet nominated for the prestigious Golden Boy award

Four Chelsea youngsters nominated for the Golden Boy award

As confirmed by the club’s official site, Chelsea have four nominations for the prestigious Golden Boy award.

The nominees are Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ethan Ampadu, Billy Gilmour, and Tino Anjorin. The former two also made the list last year.

Hudson-Odoi has benefitted from the appointment of Frank Lampard. The youngster has made 25 appearances for the club this season and has scored three goals and five assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

He also played a key role in our Europa League triumph last season and also won three caps for the English national team. The youngster signed a new contract last September, putting to rest worries about his future.

The rise of Billy Gilmour has been spectacular

Ampadu, on the other hand, is on loan at RB Leipzig. He has made just seven appearances this season including a stellar performance in defence against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. The 19-year-old also helped Wales qualify for next summer’s European Championship.

Gilmour and Anjorin both made their breakthrough in recent months. The former, in particular, impressed against Liverpool and Everton, winning back-to-back man-of-the-match awards in our two matches against them. (h/t Chelsea FC)

Anjorin made his debut against Everton. The youngster is also the top scorer for our unbeaten development squad this season.

Among the favourites for the award are Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, while Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and Ansu Fati of Barcelona are also in contention. (h/t Chelsea FC)

Former winners to have played for Chelsea include Cesc Fabregas and Alexandre Pato. It has to be noted that neither of them won the award during their time at Chelsea.

The long list features 100 players aged 21 or under, who play for European clubs and have impressed over the past 12 months.

Although it is extremely unlikely that any of our nominees will win the award, it is a mark of their progress that they are even under consideration.

With youth being the flavour under Lampard, we can expect more names to appear in the coming years.
