Chelsea in talks to extend 27-year-old forgotten man’s contract

Chelsea in talks with Marco van Ginkel over a new contract

According to AD (h/t Mirror), Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has confirmed that his agent is in talks with Chelsea regarding a new contract.

The 27-year-old has featured just four times since joining the club in 2013. Nicknamed the next Frank Lampard, the youngster arrived at Stamford Bridge as the reigning Dutch Talent of the Year.

He made his debut for the club in both the Premier League and the Champions League soon after. Unfortunately, he injured his ACL two months later and has had a horrid time with injuries since.

He looked set to depart Chelsea when his contract expires in the coming weeks. The club are willing to offer the Dutchman a second chance and have opened negotiations regarding a fresh contract.

“My agent, Karel Jansen, is in talks with Chelsea about a new contract for me.”

Van Ginkel has had three loan spells since joining Chelsea. Spells at AC Milan and Stoke City were promising but failed to hit the required heights.

It was back in his homeland with PSV Eindhoven that the Dutchman displayed a resurgence. he scored 31 goals and supplied 10 assists in 64 games during his two-year spell at the Philips Stadion. (h/t Transfermarkt)

His form and leadership abilities saw him be made the captain at PSV whom he led to the Eredivisie title in 2018. (h/t Mirror)

He has not played competitively since. Van Ginkel is keen to repay Chelsea’s faith in him. He expressed his gratitude at the club’s decision to do so, especially at such a tough time.

“I am very happy at this show of confidence in me by the club.”

He expects to start over with the club’s Under 23 side if a deal can be agreed upon.

A versatile player capable of playing in a multitude of positions, Van Ginkel is adept in both the attack and defence.

Now 27, he has missed years of football due to his injuries. Hopefully, the club’s gesture is a sign of better things to come.

Dutchman Daley Blind only hit the peak in his 30s. Now considered an Ajax legend, Van Ginkel can hopefully replicate his success.
