Chelsea star admits fans almost drove him out of the club

Jorginho considered quitting Stamford Bridge after stick from fans

According to FourFourTwo (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea star Jorginho has revealed that he came close to calling it quits at Stamford Bridge following criticism during his first season.

The Italian international was brought in by Maurizio Sarri for £57million in the summer of 2018. There was a great deal of anticipation after we beat the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool to his signing.

The player, however, initially found it hard to adapt to the Premier League as Sarri continued to play him as a holding midfielder.

Jorginho has improved under Frank Lampard

Jorginho believes the criticism was unfair. Rather than be cowed by it, he used it as motivation to get better and disprove his detractors.

“Last year, fans were picking on me a lot because I’d arrived with another manager and, in my opinion, I ended up hearing some things that were honestly unfair.”

Fans are usually opinionated and fickle when it comes to sports. Jorginho took the mature approach and chose to do his talking on the pitch. The Italian knew in his heart that the fans were wrong, and was motivated to do well.

He admitted that he has never had it easy at any club he has been at and has had to fight for his place. It is a testament to his battling character that he has so far overcome everything thrown at him. Criticism has only motivated Jorginho to do better and it shows.

“It gives me more strength to work even harder, to prove to everyone that I can make it.”

Jorginho has shown he is the real deal under Frank Lampard

It has, however, not been easy. Seen as the on-field proponent of Sarri-Ball, Chelsea fans often turned on him during games. With Frank Lampard taking over last summer, Jorginho has thrived in a more expansive style of football.

Lampard’s impact has been noted by the player, who thanked the Blues boss for his support.

Jorginho is a vastly experienced player who brings oodles of experience to our midfield. With a number of youngsters coming through at Chelsea, the presence of experienced heads is a must.

It becomes even more apparent considering Willian, Oliver Giroud and Pedro are all out of contract in the summer.
