Chelsea keen to sign Freiburg striker Luca Waldschmidt
According to the Sun (h/t Mirror), Chelsea are set to being talks with Bundesliga side Freiburg for striker Luca Waldschmidt.
The Blues are keen to bring in replacements for strikers Michy Batsuayi and Oliver Giroud. The duo is set to depart Stamford Bridge in the summer. This will leave the club with just one experienced striker in Tammy Abraham.
The 23-year-old has endured an injury ridden season at the Schwarzwald Stadion this season. He has made just 16 appearances and has scored six goals and two assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The striker has left an impression on Chelsea boss Frank Lampard who is keen to add to his attack. He believes that although the player has a lot to learn, he can turn into a physical forward capable of making a difference.
A prolific scorer at the Under-21 level, he topped the scoring charts at the Under-21 European championships. He netted 7 goals in the tournament, drawing comparisons with German legend Gerd Muller. (h/t Mirror)
Giroud is out of contract in the summer while Batshuayi has failed to make a mark when given the opportunity. The lack of firepower in the absence of Abraham necessitates strengthening if we are to remain competitive.
Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Leipzig striker Timo Werner. An extremely prolific striker, he has also been linked with a move to Liverpool.
The path to the German will not be straightforward, given his public admission to being a fan of Liverpool. Waldschmidt is a much more realistic option and is valued at around £20million.
