According to Daily Mail, Chelsea will be one of the biggest losers from a financial point of view if the current season is voided.
With the coronavirus pandemic suspending football all across Europe, there have been calls for the season to be declared null and void.
Given the immense financial loss that would have occurred, the Premier League had come to the conclusion that the matches will resume once it is safe to do so.
FIFA also extended the season indefinitely, giving associations further leeway to complete the season at their convenience. (h/t Mirror)
It has now been revealed how much the Blues stood to lose had the season gone incompleted. Chelsea would have experienced the fourth biggest loss standing at a substantial £91million.
This takes into account the disparity in earnings from TV viewership, matchday income and retail revenue. Only the Manchester clubs and Liverpool stand to lose more, with the trio’s losses going above the £100million mark each.
The club recorded an after-tax loss of £96million for the 2018/19 season. A further loss in income this season would not be helpful.
With revenue streams currently running dry, a number of clubs have taken to applying for the government’s furlough program to ensure the non-playing staff are compensated.
This has led to much debate, forcing Liverpool to overturn their original decision in the wake of public outcry. (h/t Liverpoolfc.com)
Manchester City and Manchester United, however, have already confirmed that they will not be applying for the program.
As of now, the Chelsea staff are all being paid in full. The club have also opened up the Millennium Hotel on their stadium site to NHS staff working in London hospitals (h/t Guardian).
