French World Cup-winning striker Oliver Giroud has performed a transfer U-turn and is now keen on extending his contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 33-year-old’s decision comes after impressing in the starting line-up in Tammy Abraham’s absence. He once again performed well as Chelsea saw off Liverpool in the FA Cup at home.
Giroud looked to be on his way out in January after failing to feature regularly under Frank Lampard. Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Inter Milan, and Lazio were all keen on signing him.
The report goes on to say that the Italian clubs are still keeping tabs on him, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
Asked about his future, Giroud answered in no uncertain terms that he wants to stay put.
“Yes. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course.”
Giroud admitted that he still has two to three good seasons in him and will make a decision at the end of the season.
“It’s not the time to talk about contracts and everything but I will take a decision when it comes.”
The Frenchman rejected a move to Newcastle United in January and had a move to Inter Milan all but agreed upon. The transfer fell through after the Italians pulled out.
Chelsea were unwilling to sell the player without signing a replacement and the player’s recent performances have vindicated their decision to do so. Lampard rates Giroud higher than Michy Batshuayi and the veteran has been a focal point of attack for a young Chelsea side.
The Belgian is likely to be the one to leave in the summer after Giroud’s change of heart.
The striker’s relationship with Lampard has improved in recent weeks after he was frozen out of the team during the transfer window. Giroud joined the Blues in 2018 and has scored 20 goals and 13 assists in 75 games.
