Chelsea star admits to doing everything to leave Stamford Bridge in January

Olivier Giroud did everything to leave Chelsea in the January window

According to a report by Sky Sports, Olivier Giroud has admitted to doing everything he could to leave Chelsea during the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old striker hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since moving to Stamford Bridge from Arsenal. He has struggled for game time, with Frank Lampard choosing to primarily rely on the young Tammy Abraham to lead the line.

While that move has worked wonders for the team, it has dealt a severe blow to the Frenchman’s chances of playing regularly.

The Euro competition has been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and this will provide the striker with an added window of time to get himself into France’s squad.

Speaking to Telefoot (h/t Sky Sports), Giroud said: “I had six tough months, which is why I wanted a change of scene to get back to playing and enjoying myself on the pitch, so I tried to leave in January.”

He claimed that he could not leave because Chelsea had to find a replacement before letting him go – which they were unable to do in January (h/t Sky Sports).

As a result, he had to stay back but Giroud also suggested that he has quickly moved on from the disappointment.

During the January window, the player had attracted interest from Tottenham, Inter Milan and Lazio, as per Sky Sports. As and when the summer transfer window resumes, it remains to be seen how Giroud fares.
