According to Daily Mail UK, Chelsea are unlikely to extend the loan spell of Gonzalo Higuain. The Juventus-bound striker joined hands with his former manager Maurizio Sarri earlier this season.
However, the 31-year-old couldn’t create the desired impact as he struggled to find his feet. Prior to the Stamford Bridge move, Higuain had another unsuccessful loan spell at AC Milan.
Now, the Blues do not seem to be interested in extending the Argentine’s loan spell, which costs £15.7million. He also holds a release clause of £31.6m.
Instead, the Londoners are likely to extend Olivier Giroud’s contract for one more year.
The Frenchman also had an underwhelming Premier League campaign but fared well in the Europa League with 10 goals in 13 games. Giroud was pushed down the ranks by Sarri since the arrival of Higuain.
The Blues also has plans of making Mateo Kovacic a mainstay. The Croatian midfielder was loaned from Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old has been impressive for the Blues and also became a regular under the Italian manager.
Kovacic’s loan spell is due to expire at the end of this season and the Londoners are looking to negotiate with the Los Blancos regarding his permanent move.
The Blues wound up this season’s Premier League by finishing third in the table. Having already qualified for the Champions League, Sarri’s men will meet fellow London club Arsenal in the Europa League final.
