Chelsea are set to extend the contract of teenager Reece James (h/t Independent). The English U-20 international progressed through the youth ranks of the Blues and broke into the main team last year.
He was subsequently loaned to Championship side Wigan Athletic until the end of the season. The 19-year-old full back became a regular in Paul Cook’s side, bagging three goals and three assists in 45 appearances.
He also bagged the Latics player of the year award and was selected in the Championship team of the season.
Now the Blues are set to ensure the English prospect a guaranteed position in the main team next season, keeping in mind the transfer ban.
James is touted be the successor of Cesar Azpilicueata, who is on the cusp of entering into his 30’s. Furthermore, James was a transfer target of Manchester United and a host of German clubs.
The teenager was also a part of the England U-19 side that won the UEFA European U-19 Championship.
The Blues have booked their place in the Champions League next season as they finished third in the Premier League table. They play fellow London rivals Arsenal in Europa League final later this month.
