Chelsea have no interest in selling Marcos Alonso this month after the left wing-back emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid, claims the Daily Mail. The Blues are hoping to keep hold of their main stars despite the European transfer window being open until August 31.
Alonso, 27, has established himself as a key player for the Blues in the last couple of seasons and has started in both of Maurizio Sarri’s games in charge this season, scoring a late winner last weekend in a thrilling 3-2 victory against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso has garnered a reputation of being one of the best left-backs in Premier League since joining Chelsea from Fiorentina in 2016. The Spaniard grew up at Real Madrid’s academy before moving to Bolton Wanderers in 2010.
The Daily Mail says Atletico Madrid are set to make an offer for Alonso before the transfer window closes but the Londoners are ready to rebuff all offers for the defender. A return to the Spanish capital could appeal to Alonso but there is no strong desire on the wing-back’s part to leave Chelsea as he is settled, the report adds.
Alonso is a vital cog in Chelsea’s machine and has repeatedly showcased his ability to contribute going forward, with the Spaniard already grabbing a goal and two assists in two Premier League appearances this season. Defensively, Alonso can be vulnerable at times but he is undoubtedly a big-game player for us.
Despite the left-back’s shortcomings, he has shown himself to be a valuable asset to Chelsea, so keeping him at Stamford Bridge will be a wise move by Sarri.
