Chelsea looking at former stars for crucial role in club’s management

Frank Lampard and Michael Ballack

Chelsea will step up their efforts to find a new technical director at the club and replace Michael Emenalo once the transfer window ends, according to the Guardian.

Emenalo left the side last November and the report adds that Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has been handling player recruitment and departures for the past two windows.

The names that have been linked with the role include former Chelsea players Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti. The report from the Guardian further adds names such as Monchi of AS Roma and Dan Ashworth of the FA.

Chelsea have also held informal talks with candidates who have approached the club directly, and are aware that Manchester United are also looking for someone to take up a similar role at Old Trafford, the report claims.

The Guardian also adds that Maurizio Sarri would be eager to work with the new technical director and a person who is conversant in Italian could be the preferred choice at Stamford Bridge.

Juliano Belletti

The club had prioritised signing their new manager rather than getting a technical director during the last window. The report also adds that the role and duties of the new technical director have not been confirmed yet as the new arrival might end up splitting responsibilities with the other senior staff members.

Chelsea do need to bring someone in and Granovskaia should not be looking after the player recruitment. It is a bit of a surprise that we are still without a technical director and it will be important for us to get the right person for the club in the coming weeks.
