Championship side Leeds United have made a move to sign Chelsea’s Lewis Baker according to the Mirror (Update at 07:25).
The report claims that new manager Marcelo Bielsa wants to sign the England U21 international after the youngster spent last season on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough.
Baker played 14 games for the side last season and also scored a couple of goals for Middlesbrough. The 23-year-old has been on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and even Vitesse Arnhem during his career at Chelsea but he has never made a Premier League start for us in all these years.
Baker has only taken part in one cup game for us during his tenure at Stamford Bridge and Leeds want to sign the player on a permanent deal before the start of next season.
However, the Championship side is also open to signing the Englishman on loan as they look to push for a chance at promotion next season.
It does seem unlikely that Baker would be getting a first-team chance at Chelsea next season with the competition we have in midfield. It would make sense for us to sell the youngster while we can still get a decent price for him.
Baker would be another youngster that we had high expectations of when he was coming through the ranks but his subsequent loan moves haven’t been great and it is probably the right move for him too as he looks to build his career away from the Blues.
