Chelsea will be looking to finish the Champions League group stage in style with the visit of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid to Stamford Bridge.
Antonio Conte’s men look to be in pole position going into the final clash of the group stages, but he will be keen to ensure to finish on top of the table, with Roma breathing down their necks. The Blues lead Roma by two points but an inferior head-to-head record could seriously cost us, with the Italian side taking on the bottom-placed Qarabag.
While the 2-1 victory at Atletico Madrid, courtesy Michy Batshuayi’s stoppage-time winner was certainly the highlight of our Champions League campaign, the 4-0 thrashing of Qarabag in Israel ensured our place in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Atletico, who have not lost a game since the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, are on a 9-game unbeaten streak, which includes 7 draws. Their hopes of qualifying for the next round have not fully been extinguished. Atletico can secure a last-16 berth only if Roma either lose or draw with Qarabag at home, and they beat us tonight.
This won’t be as easy as last time for us; Conte needs to be wary of Atletico’s threat. We have to defend well against the likes of Kevin Gamiero and Antoine Griezmann, sit deep, defend well and look to hit Atletico on the counter.
Conte will have a plan in his mind to disrupt Simeone’s men at the Bridge, just like he did in the reverse fixture. After a 3-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday, finally, it’s matchday, with the Champions League tune ringing in my ears already.
