An utter stalemate! For the first time since 2005, Chelsea and Arsenal played a 0-0 draw at the Stamford Bridge. It’s not that both the defences were extraordinarily out of this world, no, the respective attacking unit slandered some easiest of chances.
Chelsea started off brightly and were pushing Arsenal into their own area, but the Gunners somehow managed to survive. One chance came off Pedro’s way when the Spaniard was allowed too much of space to test Petr Cech’s resolve, but the 30-year-old’s effort was aimed directly towards his former teammate.
A golden opportunity fell again on his way when Fabregas released him with a jaw-dropping through ball which saw him getting one-on-one against Cech, but the Czech international kept his composure and denied the Spaniard with relative ease.
Arsenal, as the game progressed, gained the momentum and Aaron Ramsey almost gave his side, only to be denied by the frame of the post. The Welsh international somehow managed to cruise past a number of Chelsea players before taking a shot. His effort struck the post and fell down to Lacazette’s way, but the Frenchman fired his shot way up the post. Should have done better!
Arsenal thought they have broken the deadlock as Mustafi headed the ball into Chelsea’s net, but the German’s celebrations were cut short as the linesman ruled his effort offside. Heading into the final 10 minutes as bookies and betting companies looked intriguing, Arsenal pushed forward, but unfortunately to no effect.
The talking point came in the 87th minute when David Luiz received his marching orders for stamping Sead Kolasinac on his ankle. The Brazilian had already received a booking for raising his boot early in the game, but the referee decided to issue a straight red for his tackle. This remained the highlights of the game and this is how the Chelsea fans reacted to the result:
