Gladbach Claims Chelsea Does Not Have a Buy-Back Clause for Thorgan Hazard

The 23-year old Belgian midfielder, Thorgan Hazard, has been in the limelight recently thanks to his incredible skills on the pitch. Wearing a Bundesliga outfit seems to have brought out his A-game, as depicted by his fine form for Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, Chelsea has declared that when they sold him last year, they had a buy-back clause attached to the deal and they might want the midfielder back at Stamford Bridge. Even as Premier League Odds favored Chelsea last weekend, the Belgian club refuted such claims, saying Thorgan Hazard’s contract does not have an inserted buy-back clause.
Eden Hazard’s brother has been playing tremendously well this season and it seems the blues have a plan to poach him back from Germany. This could be Antonio Conte’s new strategy to pair the brothers in future lineups, but only if their claims are substantiated. In the last 11 matches of the 2016-17 Bundesliga season, Thorgan Hazard managed to score seven goals, along with three assists. He also scored one goal against La Liga Champions Barcelona in their 2-1 loss at home in the Champions League group stage.
Max Eberl, the Director of Sport at Borussia Monchengladbach, has vehemently quashed the ongoing hearsay that Chelsea could be making plans of offering Thorgan Hazard a lucrative deal in the January transfer window. He expressed his sentiments by passionately saying that the blues did not include such a clause in Hazard’s contract by the time they were closing the deal last year.
Speaking to the German outlet Express, Eberl said the club has no secrets to hide from people when it comes to the midfielder’s contract. He added that since they bought a top player from the blues, then Chelsea has the right to continue bidding for the same player repeatedly. However, Borussia Monchengladbach has not received any fresh bid from them. According to Eberl, Thorgan Hazard is still under an active contract at Borussia Monchengladbach, and if any club, including Chelsea wants to buy him, then bids are welcome. On the other hand, Chelsea has the right to consider a future buy-back option.
On February 23 last year, a statement on Chelsea’s official website read that they have the option of using a buy-back clause on Thorgan Hazard. This was before they even thought of selling the midfielder to the German side. If Chelsea went on to put the same statement into practice, then one of the possibilities is that the clause has already expired for the German international.
When approached last week to comment on the rumor that he might be considering a return to Stamford Bridge, the No.10 midfielder denied such claims. Instead, he claimed that his focus will remain on playing for his current club and he has never thought of moving back to Chelsea. He gave the details to Belgian publication Het Laatste Niuews saying that even though he is yet to define his limits, he is happy in Germany. He also humorously added that Eden usually tells him jokingly to calm down because everyone might start thinking he is more talented than him.
