Food For Thought: 2 Players Chelsea Should Have Signed On Deadline Day

It was late, but it was coming, to say the least. Just when we were about settle down with the fact that Chelsea are not going to sign anymore player, the manager spelled his magic and brought on two well-acclaimed players; one from Serie A, Marcos Alonso, and other from Ligue 1, David Luiz. The Blues spent £85.26m this term and the players are now looking set to kick their campaign off.

Talking about the recent form, the Blues have hit the strides and have started their new campaign in a stylish fashion. 3 wins out of 3 and the Stamford Bridge outfit are only one of those three clubs, who have done this so far and this has let the manager to mark his name in the nominees for the best manager in the Premier League for the month of August.

Furthermore, the players themselves have regained the confidence that was heavily missing last term. Players like Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic have started greatly and the attack is now looking tougher than ever. Defence was an issue, but the manager sorted that out as well, but maybe a couple of new names into the squad may have made a huge difference. So, here are the two players Chelsea should really have signed on the deadline day:

  • James Rodriguez-

Even though the 2014 World Cup hero, James Rodriguez, is struggling to find a permanent spot in Real Madrid’s lineup, he has been a real hero for his nation, Columbia. Recently, the Columbians defeated Venezuela by two goals to one and James was unarguably the stand-out performer for the side. His stats line reads a little something like this: 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 missed PK, 4 potential assists. Throughout the game, the 25-year-old asserted his authority in the game, but that, unfortunately, didn’t change anything for Zinedine Zidane.

The attacker was linked with a move to the Stamford Bridge this summer, but Real were unwilling to let him go on cheap and on their part, they were perfectly correct as well. But, on the other hand, we personally believe that he could have been a major attacking force for the team. Thanks to his versatility, he can operate the game from attacking midfield as well and hence, he could have easily surpassed Oscar in the team. Well, this could have been the fastest attacking trio in the Premier League, if the transfer would have happened.

  • Mattea Di Sciglio-

The 23-year-old AC Milan full-back is surely a surprise name in the list, but he could have been a great addition to the squad. Yes, the blues have recently bought the former Sunderland midfielder Marcos Alonso, but that doesn’t mean their business is done. I’m not saying that he is a poor choice, my point here is; Di Sciglio could have bettered the option for the manager.

The 23-year-old was a favourite candidate for Conte during the European Championship and he performed extremely well during the course. The main reason behind his name in the list is the manager would have gotten the option on the full back area. Di Sciglio is known for his versatility and allows him to play at multiple positions, most notably, both the full-back spot. Be it left or right, the Italian can operate the game from both the flanks and in that case, the manager would have had options in terms of changing the formation as well. And in that case, the 3-5-2 would have acted really well.
