The transfer window is approaching and the managers of the respective teams are scouting the players from all around Europe. The London side Tottenham Hotspur had a great time under Pochettino last campaign and the side will be looking forward to build something extraordinary for the season to come.
With Champions League card to play for, the Argentine manager will have to add some fresh legs to the squad. Tottenham have recently completed the signing of the Kenyan and Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama and are reportedly chasing a number of players.
They recently made an offer for the AZ’s striker Vincent Janssen, but the Dutch side rejected the offer as their demand for the player is higher than what Tottenham offered. Well, the arrival of Wanyama for the Lilly-Whites is surely a great sign and we are pretty sure that the side will do wonders next season as well. Wanyama is an absolute rock in the midfield and his laborious work-rate is what makes him a worthy signing for Tottenham.
On the other hand, we have Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic. The 27-year-old Serbian is one of the strongest and one of the best holding midfielders in the world, but the previous season was not the one he’d like to remember for a long time. Chelsea had a poor season and so did Matic. He was left out of the squad for some time due to injuries and due to his poor form as he failed to do what was expected.
Both the players are surely one of the best in business, and here, we will try to figure out, who amongst the both had a better season last time around.
Nemanja Matic vs Victor Wanyama-
For starters, the Serbian international played 33 games for the blues, in which he scored 2 goals and created 19 chances, out of which, 2 were converted into the back of the net. Wanyama, on the other hand, played 30 games for the south coast club and scored 1 goal, created 15 chances and bagged one assist.
Being a holding midfielder, their time in front of the goal was limited, yet Matic managed to average a shooting accuracy of 40% where he shot 8 shots on target and 12 shots off target, whereas Wanyama had a shooting accuracy of 21% and managed to shoot 5 shots on target and 19 off target.
Coming on to the individual awards, it is Matic again, who wins the round as he was named as the man of the match twice and was elected as the best man in the team thrice. Wanyama, on the other hand, had no such records to show for.
The defensive midfielder is considered as the engine of the team and he is supposed to drive the team forward and Matic did just that. He averaged a passing accuracy of 88% last season and completed 1387 passes. Wanyama also did a great job as he managed a passing accuracy of 82% and completed 1100 passes.
Both the midfielders gave each other a run for their money, but it is Matic who came out as a winner as he won 47% of his average duels and also averaged 4 defensive actions per game including blocks, interceptions and clearances. Wanyama, on the other hand, won 46% of his average duels last season and averaged 5 defensive actions.
As stated earlier, both the midfielders are best at what they do, but it seems like we have a surprise winner. Stats never lie and just because of this, Matic is our clear winner.
