Chelsea finished the season with a draw against Leicester and that put an end to the misery of this disastrous season. It was disheartening to see such a slump from such a talented bunch of footballers and the one person who got the biggest damage was the Special One, Jose Mourinho. It all started with a row against the blues’ physio and it just got worse with every passing game.
There were a lot of reasons that brought the worst defense of a title ever and the blues are fortunate that after an unbeaten run of matched under the stable Hiddink, Chelsea finished tenth on the final gameweek. Hiddink brought some youth from the academy which was good to see and was the best thing to come out of the second stint of the Dutchman.
With Antonio Conte joining the squad after the Euros and John Terry signing a new one year contract, the future seems to be in good hands. But this season should not be forgotten easily and must prove as an important lesson for everyone in the board. This setback should as a springboard for success in the future and under the impressive Italian, the future is bright at the Bridge. A lot of mistakes culminated in the fall from the top for the blues but let’s take a look the three mistakes that Chelsea did this season:
1. Introduce youth late on in the campaign:
The likes of Bertrand Traore and Matt Miazga were given a chance in the first team very late in games of less importance. With big names disappointing in the start, youngsters should have been given a chance to prove themselves when the stars were just pathetic.
2. Not being busy in the transfer market:
Chelsea were too slow in the transfer market last summer and made very few additions to the title winning squad. Along with a small pre season, the squad was made to relax about their position in the team because of not adding worthy additions to the team. Every team needs to make their squad better with every transfer window to keep the players on their toes and perform at the highest level.
3. Not giving more time to Jose Mourinho:
He made a lot of mistakes, but the blues were ninth and we’re cruising in the Champions League under him and the position didn’t improve under Hiddink. The Portuguese should have been given the season to complete and should have been then left to leave the club at the end of the season. He deserved atleast that and the one man who could have helped the club reach the latter stages of the Champions League and the cup competitions was the Special One.
