Chelsea – Roma Swap Deal Is Acceptable, In My Opinion

published :

When was the last time you saw a real high-quality swap deal between two big clubs? Not for a while. Well I certainly haven’t seen anything. Sometimes clubs will take advantage of the fact that they’ve just sold a player to a certain club and now they want a little something back. But, that technically isn’t a swap deal. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good one, but Chelsea and Roma could end it.

As reported by GiveMeSport, Roma have established an interest in Romelu Lukaku who is seemingly pushing for a move away. In order to land the big Belgian, the Italian giants could throw Mehdi Benatia into the deal to give Jose Mourinho something to think about. Having just sold David Luiz and are on the verge of signing Diego Costa, it looks as the though the Blues need a defender more than an attacker right now.

While I like Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea’s priorities right now is finding a new centre back to replace Paris Saint Germain bound, David Luiz. I have mentioned in the past that I don’t think Mourinho should get rid of Lukaku just yet because he is young and has been firing in the goals for Everton and West Bromwich Albion for the past two seasons.

However, this potential deal could see a new defender arrive at the club with it. Not just any defender either. Mehdi Benatia has been brilliant this season and has guided Roma to Champions League football once again. They almost took the Serie A title away from Juventus as well, but the latter finished strongly to lay claim to the Scudetto once again.

If Benatia joins, he will start. He is too good not to and, in my opinion, he’s better than Gary Cahill and John Terry. But, will that matter if they’re all at Chelsea fighting for a place? No, because it gives Mourinho fantastic depth at the back.
