Why Napoli Forward Isn’t Needed

So many forwards have been linked with a move to Chelsea in the past few weeks, with all seemingly credible additions. Jose Mourinho has searched far and wide for replacements to the expected departures of Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres. This has thrown up results in Germany, Spain and now Italy. Diego Costa has been the front-man touted for a Chelsea switch, but until that deal takes place, the London based club will be constantly linked with moves for attackers.

Jose Callejon is the latest name to appear on the radar and it is a player that Mourinho has coached when the two were at Real Madrid. Both of them actually left last summer. Talksport are the website to pick up on the link as they’re suggesting that a complete overhaul of the Chelsea attack is expected this summer with Callejon expected to be a part of that change.

Callejon is relatively new name on the block after spending much of his career at Espanyol and playing second-fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo at Real. You might be surprised to learn that Callejon is actually 27-years-old. Not a youngster.

I’m not using his age as a reason why we shouldn’t go for him, but even if he does succeed at Chelsea, will it be too late for him to make a long term impact? Yes, it will be.

Callejon is a good player, no doubt about it. Fast, skilful and has an eye for goal. 17 goals in all competitions is a pretty good record. However, Callejon has been criticised for being lazy and quite weak in possession. Perhaps making the wrong move when his side are in a dangerous position.

There are forwards all around Europe that can offer more than Callejon and at a better price. Even Premier League forwards will be better options because they have the experience in the league.

Chelsea already have Mohamed Salah, Andre Schurrle and Willian competing for his attacking role so why would Mourinho make things harder for the talented trio? Especially when the three are as, if not more, effective than Callejon.

I like the 27-year-old, but I just don’t think he’s needed or really good enough to be a part of this Chelsea team.
