Sometimes you get a group of players that are so good at what they do, the fans and the club never want them to leave. Manchester United’s treble winning squad and Arsenal’s invincibles spring to mind when this topic is up for discussion. However, age and the modern game catches up with these players and they soon start drifting off into their own different directions. It’s sad when this happens because you don’t quite know how they’ll be replaced.
Chelsea are going through the same problems right now. Jose Mourinho’s title winning squad all those years ago are leaving the club one-by-one. Some are yet to be replaced. However, the old guard, as they are commonly referred to, aren’t splitting up just yet. The Express have reported that Frank Lampard is set to sign a one-year contract extension following the news that John Terry is also going to extended his stay at the club.
However, Ashley Cole is the one that is certainly cutting ties with the Blues this summer which is unfortunate, but that is the way. Petr Cech was rumoured to be off, however, he looks set to stay.
I think Mourinho setting up Lampard and Terry with new contracts is a great way to start the new season. Their experience and abilities are vital to any success Chelsea might have next season. They know how to win trophies in England and they know how to motivate the new players that are brought in.
Besides, Lampard and Terry still have a lot to offer the club in terms of on-field performances as both, Terry especially, shone last season. Lampard has still chipped in with a few goals which is a credit to him for still getting in the right positions at his age. I guess you never lose it.
The old guard have been so important for Chelsea for the last few seasons whether it was John Terry putting his head on the line in FA and Carling Cup finals or Didier Drogba bringing Champions League glory back to Stamford Bridge.
