‘Perfect’ Chelsea Defender Set For New Contract – Why It’s A Good Move By Blues

When Branislav Ivanovic signed for Chelsea back in 2008 few could have envisaged the impact he would have at the club. Coming over as a bustling centre-back from Lokomotiv Moscow, The Serbia international has now played in 256 for the Blues and is still a first choice in the team. According to the Daily Mail, the club are opening talks to keep him at the club for a further four years.

For me Ivanovic is the perfect Premier League defender. Although he is traditionally a centre-half he is now the Blues’ first choice right-back and I believe he is the best defender at the club, which is a huge call considering the form of John Terry and Gary Cahill.

He currently has two years on his current deal but the reports suggest that the bosses are ready to offer him a pay-rise.

For me it’s thoroughly deserved. He’s a powerful player who is adaptable to a few roles. This season he has spent all of his 27 Premier League appearances on the right of defence and also the seven he has played in the Champions League.

He’s not the quickest, though his positioning is impeccable and it is rare that he’s beaten in a 50-50 situation.

Long may his Chelsea career continue.
