Although the Chelsea fans are still hugely in favour of the Spaniard being part of their team, his departure could have a positive effect for one man in particular – Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian has struggled to get his feet under the table at Chelsea since his return from his loan spell at Werder Bremen, playing just three times in the Premier League, despite his fine form in the Bundesliga.
De Bruyne played 33 games last season in the German topflight, making 85 key passes – more than Franck Ribery (a Ballon d’Or candidate) made. From those, nine were assists, and he also chipped in with 10 goals.
But up against Mata, Eden Hazard, Willian, Oscar and Andre Schurrle for a place at the Bridge, he’s found it tough to fit in.
Should Mata depart then it would surely improve his chances of playing – if he stays at the club, that is.
