Has Andre Villas-Boas Gone Mad?

After a less than successful spell in charge of The Blues, AVB has set up camp down the road at White Hart Lane. A risky move at best, the Spurs fans have instantly warmed to him, and seem to have got on board his ideas.

Many top managers have had a poor spell at one club in their career, but after his failures at Stamford Bridge, he surely cannot afford to do it at consecutive clubs in the most prestigious league in the world.

Early signs have been good for Spurs fans, the signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen wrapped up quickly, and Hugo Lloris, and Joao Moutinho have been linked with moves amongst others.

However, despite his good start, AVB has shot himself in the foot a bit with two ludicrous interviews in the last week. First, he has hyped up all Spurs fans expectations, by claiming that they can win the league in the “near future”, in spite of the fact they are way behind both Manchester clubs, and in terms of experience, both Liverpool and Arsenal, and also us of course.

Fans of Hotspur may agree this claim may be a bit unrealistic, unless AVB knows something that no-one else does regarding the takeover talk, which means he is heaping pressure on himself to at least deliver a title challenge, despite being on the end of heavy defeats to Man City, Man Utd, and Chelsea last season.

If that wasn’t enough, he also came and attempted to try and take credit for the FA Cup and Champions League victories by claiming they were “still in the competition at the time he was sacked”. This was just days after a dismal 3-1 defeat in the knockout stage against Napoli, and days before the crucial FA Cup clash with Birmingham, whose fans were apparently gutted that AVB had been sacked prior to this game, and of course the rest was history.

Indeed a masterstroke from all in charge at Chelsea, as the timing of the dismissal meant that despite obtaining the exact same squad, Di Matteo progressed in both competitions, and of course famously went on to win them both.

He also said in the interview “I was very honoured that I was able to put that team together” despite adding just Meireles, Romeu, and Mata into the ranks, although it is commonly known that Juan Mata was 95% a Chelsea player anyway. Whilst Romeu and Meireles may well be gone this summer.

So, AVB really has it to do at Spurs, looking to build on a successful double at Chelsea, and should be bringing a Premier League trophy to White Hart Lane in the next three to five years.

No pressure Andre, lets just hope Di Matteo can build on AVB’s great work at Stamford Bridge in the 2012/13 season.
