He was one of the first and most successful signings of the Roman Abramovich era, and is the most capped overseas play for the club with 369 games in the eight years he has been at Stamford Bridge.
As well as picking up a staggering 178 clean sheets in that time, he has won nine domestic trophies since 2004, four FA Cups, three Premier League crowns, and two Carling Cups.
There were rumours that the 30 year-old might be replaced this summer, that until he ended the campaign fantastically, producing cracking displays against Liverpool and Barcelona, helping the team to the lift the FA Cup and reach the Champions League final, before saving three penalties in the final to help his team pick up their first European crown.
The new contract is a big step for Chelsea, as it is no secret that the Russian billionaire in charge is going to spend, spend, spend this summer, but obviously feel there is no need to replace his goalkeeper.
He will also play for the Czech Republic in this summers Euro 2012 competition, in a year he has been awarded the nation’s player of the year for an unbelievable seventh time.
The stopper has had few critics in his time in England, and has hardly put a foot wrong in the eight years here. Few would bet against him racking up another eight years too, but only time will tell.
