Chelsea v Fulham: Match Analysis

Chelsea progressed to the next round of the Carling Cup after playing 120 minutes of football with 10 men after a penalty shootout.

It was only our second win in nine attempts at penalty shootouts.

Chelsea fielded a youthful Chelsea squad, with  McEachran, Bertrand, Romeo, Sturridge and Lukaku all starting for the Blues.

First Half

Chelsea created many chances in the first half but couldn’t convert them to goals. Lukaku, Kalou & Sturridge all had shots on goal. The best chance of the first half came when McEachran gave a through pass to Lukaku who powered past the defender but had his shot saved by the goalkeeper.

Chelsea did find the back of the net with Sturridge putting in McEachran’s shot but the striker was given offside. He was later replaced by Lampard as a consequence of Kelly’s bad challenge.

Petr Cech also received treatment after a head injury.

Second Half

Petr Cech was replaced by Ross Turnbull for the start of the 2nd half. Kalou had another chance to score but only found the side netting. Alex got the timing of his sliding tackle wrong and Fulham were awarded a penalty. Kasami missed the penalty hitting the bar. John Terry replaced Josh Mceachran in order to restore Chelsea’s defense.
There were tired legs in extra time with Zamora and Romeu managing to get shots away. But no goals and the match was to be decided by penalties.

Penalty shootout

The penalty shootout finished 4-3 with Luiz, Terry, Malouda and Kalou scoring.

Frank Lampard came up first to take the penalty but was denied by Schwarzer.

Zamora scored his penalty next and game Fulham the lead 1-0.

David Luiz scored followed by Sidwell and Terry scoring.

Turnbull next saved Dembele’s penalty to make it 2-2.

After, Kalou, Baird and Malouda scored, Ruiz’s shot rattled the bar and Chelsea won the match.

The next round draw for the Carling Cup will be made today when Chelsea will also host Swansea City in the Premier League.
