Unfortunately on the 5th August 2011, Chelsea Legend Stan Willemse passed away at the age of 86.
Whilst younger fans, may only remember him from his appearance on the pitch in 2005 alongside ex-teammate Roy Bentley when he got to hold the Premier League trophy – sadly their team never got the opportunity when they won the league in 1955.
Older fans will have enjoyed seeing Stan play an impressive 221 games for Chelsea in a seven-year spell following his move from Brighton in 1949. Having been a Royal Marine he was known as an uncompromising full-back who would never give up – Sir Tom Finney once commented that he was the hardest defender in football.
Our thoughts our with Stan’s family and friends, we hope he rests in peace and we thank him for his passion and loyalty to Cheslea FC.
