Andre Villas-Boas Needs Marquee Signings To Build His Own Legacy at Chelsea

published :

If you take a look at transfer rumors this summer,  you will notice that there aren’t that many big names consistently linked with Chelsea right now.
The one big name that is for sure linked with Chelsea is Luka Modric. Other than  that,  God knows which other player Chelsea is seriously in for.  Sure we know that AVB is contemplating bringing in Scott Parker, but that’s hardly a big name, and Neymar whom we had been linked with in the past, seems to be destined to ply his trade in Spain. We had once been linked with Aguero as well, but these rumors have mostly died by now, so who’s going to be Chelsea’s marquee signing this summer? Or will there be a marquee signing?

The answer to that question is there must be a marquee signing. AVB is not a naive. He is a very young coach, working for one of the most powerful clubs in the world. He reports to one of the richest men in the world and has to deal with extreme player power in the dressing room. With all this in mind, it is crucial for him to stamp his authority on the squad by bringing in his own signings. I’m sure he knows full well that a coach’s legacy is defined by two things primarily: number one – titles, and number two – players, and number three – character. Mourinho’s  had it all during his spell at  the Bridge. He build his legacy by delivering silverware, bringing in world class players, and of course establishing himself as the special one. For these reasons, he will forever remain in the fans’ heart.

Mourinho’s legacy is still living through his players. Chelsea coaches have so far been reluctant to shuffle the current squad and introduce their own players. You might argue that it was the case with Torres, but Torres is widely seen as Abrahamovich’s purchase, rather than Ancelotti’s. He will not be remembered as an Ancelotti player, contrary to current Chelsea leaders Drogba, Lampard, Terry, and Cech – all seen as Mourinho’s players. It is time a coach came in and had the guts to make some actual changes. For AVB to create his own legacy and be successful, he needs to make this Chelsea team his own.

This doesn’t mean he necessarily needs to sack all the current players, but he needs to trim the squad, and bring in some world-class talent. The players he brings in need to be exiting and eye-catching in order to get the fans dreaming again.

Let’s be real, none of the current Chelsea players make us dream. They possess as much fantasy and creativity as a black suit! Liverpool has Suarez, United has Nani, Arsenal has Nasri and Fabregas, Tottenham has Modric and Van Der Vaart, and City has Silva. The closest to an exiting player we have is our own 17 year old sensation, Josh!

AVB needs to recruit flair players as he promised, World-class players that will keep us on the edge of our seats or couches; players capable of producing the unexpected at any time.

That’s what we need from this transfer window.

    I believe avb needs to bring in 5 new players to stamp his own mark on chelsea and to win silverware. I would like him to bring in aguero, hazard/mata, sneijder, rodwell, van de weil/sergio ramos. aguero because he will work brilliantly with torres and he has done in the past, he has flair, skill, pace and will bang in goals. and hazard i would like to see bought in as we still need a player that can give us width and will get crosses in and chip in with a goal every other game. and i believe hazard would be the perfect player for this. sneijder because we need a new attacking midfielder to replace lampard and he has creativity and will slot the passes through to torres week in week out and will also get goals aswell. then my reason for rodwell he will be able to cover essein during his injury then also be a long term replacement for terry and can play attacking midfield. then we also need a good right back bosingwa just inst good enough. then we sell players such as malouda, anelka, kalou, zhirkov, ferrira.

    A Chelsea revival will require more than Villas-Boaz; Chelsea must get fresh players. It’s time for staff and fans to face some facts. Chelsea has six slowing players; they cannot hope to compete with Man Utd and Barcelona like that. If Chelsea are serious about beating these teams they will need to sign some special talent; and this talent must be young enough to give Chelsea a good ten years. We understand the need for evolution instead of revolution; a big and sudden change can make a team weak. But one or two new players isn’t going to do it either. Some serious change is required. Chelsea’s right wing-backs have been sub-standard for a number of seasons, and some of our beloved golden-oldies are a meter short of pace. Against the top sides, this simply won’t do! So how serious are we?

    @Alex,
    I doubt that AVB will bring in 5 players in the next month. I think something more realistic would be to expect about 3 more players. In fact I think that should be enough for this season. I like all your targets! but I think we can forget about Sneijder, he will go to ManU, or stay at Inter. I think our priorities should be Modric/PAstore for playmaker, Aguero as forward and as 3rd target eiher another young forward or a right back.

    Agree we need a few players. Ancelotti did well with last year's additions, AVB needs to add to that. I think 3 more players should do for now. Bosingwa has been poor at RB and Ivanovic is not natural going forward, so I understand your point there. I'm not totally sold on VDW either though he looks inconsistent in defense. I'm not against maintaining Brasna at RB, if we pickup a good forward to work that right flank, we could live with Brasna at RB.
