Steven Taylor’s injury-time goal meant Carlo Ancelotti’s side finished their home campaign with only a point, despite an excellent start to the season this year has been a case of what could have been.
The Blues got off to a good start after Branislav Ivanovic gave Chelsea an early lead in the second minute when he connected with Frank Lampard’s corner.
The Geordies levelled just eight minutes later when Ryan Taylor’s free-kick was deflect into the net by Jonas Gutierrez who happily took credit for it.
With just seven minutes left, Alex put Chelsea 2-1 up and on their way to three points. Once again, Lampard provided the assist as he swung in a free-kick for the Brazilian defender to head past Tim Krul for his first goal since October.
Whilst both teams did not have any silverware to play for, both sides were just playing for a higher position and pride. The home side dominated throughout the game and will be disappointed to have only got a point.
This summer will see further redevelopment, in January it started with big money arrivals of Fernando Torres and David Luiz; two players who Ancelotti ideally wanted to sign at the start of the season. There is also a big question over whether the Italian will still be in charge come the start of next season.
